Suffer with Hay-fever no more!

Tags :

I don’t know about you, but I have been a Hay-fever sufferer for years now (developed in my late 30’s) , I used to be able to take Cetirizine Hydrochloride or Loratadine for the symptoms but in recent years, only the Cetirizine worked, well thats what I thought…… until this year, oh no, now the over the counter remedies don’t work and I felt awful (almost like a cold but I knew it was the hay-fever) with all the lovely weather we were having lately, I could not even sit in the garden for long before the nose started running, sneezing every 5 seconds, and scratching my eyes making the mascara go all over my face! it was getting unbearable.

As I work for the clinic, I asked the doctor for a steroid injection, as I’d seen patients coming in for that for years and hey presto… the itchy eyes and the constant running nose and sneezing has stopped, voila!

If like me (before working at the clinic),  you had/have no clue what other options are out there for this annoying allergy, now you do!

We are a private clinic in Luton providing a fast solution to your hay-fever symptoms if antihistamines don’t work.

As most people know, Hay-fever is an allergy to grass or hay pollen, which effect 1 in 5 people in the UK,  and you can even develop hay-fever in your 40’s, although most people are diagnosed in their teens or early 20’s.

Don’t suffer any more, don’t delay call us today 🙂

Earwax Build-up

Tags :

Do you have difficulty hearing? do you use cotton buds to clean out your ears? here are a few reasons why you may have difficulty in hearing and why you shouldn’t use cotton buds.

Earwax is produced to keep your ears clean and free from germs. It usually passes out by itself, but sometimes it can cause a problem by building up.

What causes earwax build-up?

  • being elderly (earwax becomes drier with age)
  • some people naturally produce lots of wax
  • having narrow or hairy ear canals
  • if you frequently insert objects into your ear canal like cotton buds/ear plugs/hearing aids

If you have earwax build up it can cause some symptoms for example, ear ache, hearing loss, itchiness, vertigo, ear infections, tinnitus, these problems normally improve once the build-up has been removed.

If your ears are blocked dont try and remove the build-up yourself, you can buy some ear drops from a pharmacy or some researchers have found that using a few drops of warmed olive oil can soften the wax in the ear making it easier to leave the ear. (after adding the olive oil , lie down with your ear against a towel and let the oil and wax drip out)

Anyone in the medical field can tell you, they have seen many catastrophes resulting from using cotton swabs. From punctured eardrums to super impacted wax, there are many negative consequences associated with “do-it-yourself” ear cleaning.

If you are experiencing wax or dirt build-up in your ears, contact your medical care professional for instructions on how to safely clean your ears.

Third Of UK ‘Misjudge’ Health When It Comes To Weight

Tags :

Are you looking for weight loss advice from the best private doctor Hertfordshire has to offer? Well seeking help is the first step to a new, healthier you, but unfortunately there are a growing number of people who are misjudging their own weight and the effects it is having on their bodies.

The Aviva Health Check report has uncovered that 36 per cent of British people consider themselves to be healthy, when actually they’re medically considered obese – a figure that has risen by four per cent in the last year.

These people, who consider themselves healthy, are ignoring the life-threatening risks of type II diabetes and heart disease that comes with being overweight and obese.

The report also found that only eight per cent of the obese have sought help from their doctor to try and lose weight – this may be something to do with a staggering figure of 51 per cent of people considered overweight that have no interest in losing weight at all.

To battle the bulge, you need to focus on two key areas – exercise and diet. The NHS believes people should be doing 150 minutes of aerobic exercise a week in order to lose weight, however 17 per cent say they never exercise at all.

When it comes to diet, the number of people eating the unhealthiest snacks has fallen, however, many still fail to eat healthily.

This is where the doctors at the Thornhill Clinic can help – with our weight loss DNA testing, we can provide a comprehensive diet plan that’s adapted to your actual genetic make-up, boosting the efficiency of dieting in weight loss.

3 Examples Where Alcohol And Drug Testing May Be Necessary

Tags :

Alcohol and drug testing in Bedfordshire can provide valuable information for individuals and organisations. This article will outline some of the key reasons why collecting samples for examination may be helpful.

  1. Businesses and employment

Some businesses have random alcohol and drug screening to ensure employees are keeping in line with misuse policies. This is often particularly important in jobs where health and safety is a factor.

For example, organisations that have fleets of long-haul drivers may wish to test their staff regularly to ensure no one is getting behind the wheel while under the influence.

  1. Law enforcement agencies

UK courts often require convicted criminals to abstain from drinking alcohol and taking drugs as part of a leniency deal to avoid going to prison, especially when addiction is a primary factor in the case.

However, law enforcement agencies must be able to confirm that individuals are sticking to the terms of their sentence, which means regular alcohol and drug testing methods is often essential.

  1. Concerned friends and family

NHS figures indicate 6 per cent of men and 2 per cent of women in the UK are alcohol dependent. Figures in the Guardian showed that 13 per cent of people who had ever taken illegal drugs felt they had developed a problem.

Addiction can create a huge strain on families and friends, and people often seek external help to support loved ones who abuse alcohol or drugs. Encouraging an addict to attend regular testing could help them to stick to a rehabilitation programme.

Breakthrough In Pancreatic Cancer Treatment?

Tags :

Ultrasound treatments may be the breakthrough that the medical profession has been looking for with regards to the treatment of pancreatic cancer, with researchers from Ulster University finding that it can significantly reduce tumour sizes.

The treatment is minimally invasive, making use of harmless sound waves to treat the disease, which is the fourth most common cause of death related to cancer worldwide.

Tests on the most common form of pancreatic tumour revealed a five-fold reduction in tumour size, with top pancreatic cancer surgeon Mark Taylor saying: “This therapy has the potential to reduce pancreatic tumours to a size which would make surgery an option for a greater number of patients, as well as increasing palliative care options at the very advanced stage. It is a very positive step forward in treating one of the most challenging forms of the disease.”

Because the symptoms are so vague, it can be hard to diagnose pancreatic cancer. The three most common symptoms are pain in the back or stomach, jaundice or weight loss – but it’s important that you bear in mind that these symptoms can be the result of many other health conditions and, according to the NHS, aren’t typically the result of cancer.

If you’re worried about how you’re feeling and want to get yourself checked out, talk to your private doctor in Luton, who will be more than happy to discuss your symptoms. Get in touch with us here at the Thornhill Clinic if you’re concerned about yourself or a family member.

X-Ray Reveals Bobby Pin In 4-Year-Old Boy

Tags :

Making sure your children don’t swallow anything they shouldn’t and rushing them straight to your local Luton doctor for an X-ray if they do is imperative if you want to avoid a serious situation.

For example, a four-year-old boy who swallowed a bobby pin had doctors baffled for months after they could find no explanation for his fever and back pain, according to the Daily Mail.

Initially diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, doctors eventually scanned the child and found the 6cm pin which had perforated his small bowel and become lodged in his kidney.

Writing in the BMJ Case reports, the boy’s father said: “First, when my son started to complain, I and most of the doctors who saw him were not worried because he did not show any alarming symptoms. But once I was informed that my son had a ‘bobby pin’ stuck in his kidney and that he would need an operation, I started to blame myself for that delay in management.”

Thinking your child has fallen ill can be a very stressful time – especially as in this case when doctors were unable to correctly diagnose the problem.

We here at the Thornhill Clinic offer a wide variety of services to give our patients the best care possible. We offer blood tests, ultrasound scans, MRI and CT scans, ECGs, full medicals, pain management, vaccinations, X-rays, steroid injections and the meningitis B vaccination.

Do not hesitate to get in touch with us if there’s anything we can help you with.

Thousands ‘At Risk’ By Avoiding Flu Jab

Tags :

Go to see your doctors in Bedfordshire this winter to have your flu jab or you could be putting yourself at serious risk, a leading health group has said.

Figures from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) indicate that GPs gave more than six per cent fewer flu injections now compared with the same time last year, with doctors now saying they have surplus amounts of unused vaccines because patients have not been making the expected number of appointments.

The worry is that because the weather has been so mild recently, people are delaying going to see their GP, despite the fact that cold weather is not always what causes flu outbreaks.

Dr Maureen Baker, RCGP chair and emergency planning expert, said: “These figures are extremely alarming. We are experiencing an incredibly mild November this year but we don’t need cold weather for a flu outbreak and influenza is a horrible illness that can also an trigger a host of other health problems.”

It can be unpleasant to catch flu but if you’re healthy otherwise you’ll find it will clear up quickly on its own. However, it can be a lot more severe in those over the age of 65, pregnant women, adults with other health conditions, children and anyone with a weakened immune system.

The vaccine against flu is free on the NHS to adults over 18 years old at risk of flu and children aged between six months and two years who are also at risk of coming down with the illness.

3 Signs Of Prostate Cancer

Tags :

Visiting a private GP in Luton for a regular check-up is often the best way to diagnose problems such as prostate cancer early. However, you may want to schedule an appointment as soon as possible if you’re experiencing certain symptoms.

According to the NHS, approximately 40,000 men are diagnosed with the disease every year, with most cases developing peopled aged over 50. The condition is also more common in people of African or African-Caribbean descent.

Here are some of the symptoms that could indicate there are problems with your prostate:

  1. Urination problems

Many of the symptoms associated with prostate cancer are due to a tumour putting pressure on the urethra, which is the duct that transports urine out of the body. Common issues include weak flow, straining to pee, more frequent urination and the feeling that the bladder is still full after going to the toilet.

  1. Weight loss

Weight loss is a potential symptom if the cancer has spread. Many men suffer from urination problems as they age, meaning they may dismiss the most obvious symptoms of prostate cancer. However, if urinary issues are combined with unexpected weight loss, you should visit a GP.

  1. Back, bone and testicle pain

Pains in these areas of the body are another sign that prostate cancer may have developed. In medical terms, the cancer is said to have metastasised. When cancer cells are present in bone, they may cause discomfort in your pelvis, hips and back. Pain and blood while passing urine is also possible.

Should I Eat Red Meat?

Tags :

When you are looking for the best private GPs Hertfordshire has to offer, make sure you are keeping up your end of the bargain by eating a healthy balanced diet.

Recent news that red meat may be highly carcinogenic has come from the WHO, with many people comparing it to tobacco, but is it really all that bad?

The news has come as the WHO have found what they believe to be a causal link to bowel cancer and it is thought that for each 50g of red processed meat eaten daily, the risk of colorectal cancer increases by 18 per cent.

This means that if you don’t eat an large amount of red meat the risk is small, but the WHO has warned that due to increasingly levels of red meat consumption across the globe, it could have a significant impact on global health overall.

There has however been some dissent, which follows a year of deliberation by scientists over whether or not to consider red meat a carcinogen. For example, some scientists are claiming that avoiding red meat does not protect you against cancer and efforts should instead be focused on stopping smoking reducing alcohol consumption and maintaining a normal body weight, The Guardian reported.

If you need to discuss your diet, or indeed want to stop smoking, discuss your drinking habits or reduce your weight then you can talk to us in confidence. We will speak to you about what would be best for you if you want to improve your health.
