Dermalux LED Phototherapy

Tags :

The Dermalux LED Phototherapy Machine is an award winning piece of equipment that is somewhat of an unsung hero in the machine world in that not many people have heard or tried it for their skin conditions like Psoriasis, Eczema, Rosacea and Dermatitis.

The machine uses 3 light waves; red, infra red and blue light for a range of skin conditions as the LED Phototherapy is used to accelerate the body’s own natural healing process, and can be used not only for the above conditions listed but to improve skin health and complexion, so if you have wrinkles but don’t like the idea of injecting why not try our machine to make you look younger.

Dermalux LED Red Light has an anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating effect on the skin.  It can help to increase hydration (reduce fine lines) and stimulates circulation in the skin.

Dermalux LED Infra-Red Light is the most deeply absorbed wavelength by the skin and works effectively with red light to help promote the production of collagen and elastin to help counteract the visible signs of ageing and skin damage – making it a great treatment for fine lines and wrinkles.

The machine is versatile, combining the different light waves it can treat a variety of different skin issues especially Rosacea.

Dermalux LED Blue Light is anti-bacterial which can be extremely effective in treating skin conditions like Acne and helps to prevent further breakouts without irritating the skin.

It can be distressing to have a skin condition but there are treatments you can use that are non invasive and the LED Phototherapy machine has proven to help.  If you would like a consultation, call us to book your appointment.

Mole Count Predicts Higher Risk Of Melanoma?

Tags :

You might want to count the number of moles you have on your right arm and then book yourself an appointment with a private GP in Bedfordshire if you have more than 11.

This is because new research coming out of King’s College London has revealed that the mole count on this part of the body was the most predictive of the entire number of moles that a person would have. Women with over seven moles on their right arm had nine times the risk of having over 50 on their body, while women with over 11 were more likely to have more than 100 in total – so were at a higher risk of developing melanoma.

Mole count is one of the best ways of determining risk of developing skin cancer, in spite of the fact that 20 to 40 per cent of melanoma cases arise as a result of pre-existing moles.

Simone Ribero from the Department of Twin Research & Genetic Epidemiology, and lead researcher on the project, said: “The findings could have a significant impact for primary care, allowing GPs to more accurately estimate the total number of moles in a patient extremely quickly via an easily accessible body part. This would mean that more patients at risk of melanoma can be identified and monitored.”

If you’re concerned about a mole, come and talk to us at the Thornhill Clinic. We can assess it for you and work out the next course of action, be it mole removal or otherwise.

MMR Vaccination Rates Fall

Tags :

If you are looking for the most affordable private GP Bedfordshire has to offer then head down to The Thornhill Clinic.

If you have children, we are able to advise on the MMR.

This vaccine protects your child against measles, mumps and rubella. All of these illnesses can be fatal and can cause complications, particularly when pregnant women catch them.

Rates have fallen across the country, with just 92.3 per cent of children receiving it in 2014-15, which is off the target of 95 per cent that is required to achieve herd immunity, The Guardian reported.

They are however not as low as rates were between 1996 and 2004 when they fell to 80 per cent. This lead to an unvaccinated generation and a significant outbreak in 2012.

If you are concerned that you are a member of the unvaccinated generation and want to make sure you are up to date, then come in to talk to us. We can test for your level of immunity and of course, offer you the vaccination if we agree you need it.

It is particularly important that women who are planning on conceiving are immune to the diseases as they can cause complications in pregnancy, and in order to ensure they are not exposed it is even considered advisable to get other members of the family vaccinated in order to prevent accidental exposure to an infection.

You can read more about the MMR and other vaccines that protect against measles mumps and rubella on the NHS choices website.

PHE: E-Cigs Significantly Less Harmful Than Smoking

Tags :

Talk to your private Bedfordshire GP if you want to give up smoking and discuss with them the benefits of swapping to an e-cigarette. New research has suggested that e-cigs are in fact approximately 95 per cent less harmful than smoking and could help you to quit.

Figures from Public Health England (PHE) have shown that 44.8 per cent of people still don’t realise that e-cigs are less harmful than smoking and, what’s more, that there is no evidence that has been produced thus far to show that they serve as a route to taking up smoking in the first place.

The review found that nearly all of the 2.6 million UK adults that use e-cigs are either former or current smokers, the majority of whom are using them as an aid to give up or to prevent them from returning to actual cigarettes.

Director of health and wellbeing at PHE professor Kevin Fenton said: “E-cigarettes are not completely risk free but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm. The problem is people increasingly think they are at least as harmful and this may be keeping millions of smokers from quitting.”

This comes after research from the University Clinic of Urology at MedUni Vienna found that there is a link between smoking and prostate cancer. And those smokers and ex-smokers who have had their prostate gland removed because of cancer are twice as likely to see the cancer return.

Giving up can be difficult but with the help of your local Bedfordshire GP, you’re sure to be able to do it.

UK Drug Use ‘On The Rise’

Tags :

The proportion of people in the UK who have taken drugs at some point is climbing, according to new research conducted by the Observer, which found that almost one in three adults in the country has done illegal drugs. If you’re worried about someone in your family who you think is suffering because of drug misuse, why not take them to the best private GP Bedfordshire has to offer and see if you can get them the help they need?

In 2008, it was found that 27 per cent of the population had taken drugs, but this has now increased to 31 per cent. In addition, the first study revealed that men were more likely to take drugs than women, but now this gender gap appears to be closing, with both men and women equally as likely to have taken drugs.

“Curiosity is the most common reason for starting to take drugs. More than two out of three who have taken drugs cite curiosity as the primary reason for starting,” the report concluded, giving other factors such as peer pressure and wanting to fit in with friends as important for initial drug-taking.

Marijuana emerged as the most popular drug, with 93 per cent of users having smoked it. Weed was found to be the drug that the majority of people (82 per cent) tried first, followed by amphetamines (six per cent), ecstasy (two per cent) cocaine (two per cent) and LSD (two per cent). Magic mushrooms (two per cent) and ketamine and crack (both one per cent) made up the rest of the list.

Dinner With Obese Friends ‘Encourages Over-Eating’

Tags :

People with friends who may be on the larger side are now being advised that going to dinner with them could see them over-eating and thus gaining weight.

Those of you out there concerned about slimming down and who are finding it hard could benefit from contacting the best private GP Bedfordshire has available who can offer you advice and support on the matter.

According to a study conducted by researchers from Southern Illinois and Cornell universities, eating alongside obese people makes others opt for larger portions and reach for the unhealthier option. A professional actress was hired to wear a fat suit as part of the study and asked to help herself to a portion of food.

The study participants were then encouraged to serve themselves either pasta or salad and it was found that while the actress had the suit on, pasta was the preferred choice, while without the suit more salad was eaten.

“These results demonstrated that people may eat larger portions of unhealthy food and smaller portions of healthy food when eating with an overweight person, probably because the health commitment goal is less activated,” the survey concluded.

Obesity rates in England have almost doubled in the last ten years and something must be done to tackle the problem. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends limiting the number of takeaways you eat, avoiding drinks that come with added sugar and having television-free days, or just limiting yourself to no more than two hours each day.

Eating healthier and getting more exercise is important for all, however, not just those who are obese or overweight.
